The 1st case of Coronavirus Disease in Kakamega County was recorded on 26th March 2020. As of 29th March 2021, Kakamega County had reported 1152 confirmed cases and 32 deaths (CFR-2.8%). A total of 99 healthcare professionals (8.6%, n=1152) had been infected. The number of cases was increasing cumulatively every month consistent with the increase countrywide. In January and February 2021, Kakamega County reported 13 and 10 cases respectively. For the month up to the 28th of March 2021, 103 cases had been reported. Following this trend, therefore, it was anticipated that as the pandemic persisted, Kakamega County would report more cases and deaths. A FELTP team was deployed to support the county in responding to the surge in COVID-19 infection. The team, therefore, needed to identify challenges the county was having with case management, infection prevention control, contact identification and contact listing, and assessment of health-worker infection status.

The objectives of the investigation were:

  • To assess the magnitude of COVID-19 in Kakamega County
  • To support and sensitize county response teams in data management
  • To assess COVID-19 preparedness and response in Kakamega County as of 30th March 2021
  • To evaluate the county’s progress in setting up the Emergency Operation Center (EOC)

At the end of the investigation, the team disseminated their findings and recommendations to the County Health Department
