RESPONSE TO OUTBREAK OF ACUTE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS IN MOMBASA COUNTY, APRIL 2024

latest news
Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) pose a significant threat to public health globally, particularly affecting children under the age of five. In March 2024, Mombasa County witnessed a concerning increase in paediatric admissions due to acute respiratory infections. By March 18th, 2024, the county had reported 542 cases of ARTIs, with 361 cases classified as severe, and tragically, 6 fatalities.

In response to this alarming situation, the Mombasa County Department of Health swiftly requested support from the National government to address the outbreak. Consequently, the Ministry of Health mobilized a team of experts from the Kenya Field Epidemiology Training Program (K-FETP) and Disease Surveillance and Response (DDSR) to collaborate with the county investigation team and provide technical assistance in investigating the outbreak.

The objectives of the investigations included:

  • Determine the magnitude of the respiratory infection outbreak
  • Identify the drivers contributing to the acute respiratory infections and associated mortalities
  • Assess the case management protocols and treatment outcomes
  • Implement preventive and control measures to curb the spread of respiratory infections
