25 February, 2025
On February 12, 2025, Migori County health authorities declared a suspected cholera outbreak in Kuria East sub-county,
linked to a 20-year-old male who presented with severe acute watery diarrhea and died shortly after admission. Subsequent
case investigations identified three of his relatives with acute gastrointestinal symptoms who tested positive for cholera.
Active case finding by the County Rapid Response Team revealed additional cases in surrounding villages. By February 14, 2025,
an increase in cholera cases and acute watery diarrhea was also reported in Kuria West, and Suna West sub-counties, including
one fatality.
Given the unidentified source of infection and potential risk factors, the Ministry of Health (MOH) deployed an investigation team
comprising personnel from the National Public Health Laboratories (NPHLS) and the Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program
(FELTP) to confirm the outbreak, assess its extent, investigate WASH-related risk factors, and support the implementation of control
measures to prevent further transmission.
