INVESTIGATION OF CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN KIAMBU COUNTY
In Kenya, several waves of cholera recrudescence have been reported in the past1. Important discrete outbreaks of cholera occurred in 1971, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1992-1993 and 1997. In the year 2005 several outbreaks occurred in various parts of the country e.g. Malindi, Kibwezi, Busia and Nairobi. The last cholera outbreak occurred in 2017 with over 3,900 cases. Of these 17 succumbed to the disease. The reduction in cholera case fatality rate has been successful due to improved surveillance and control of diarrheal diseases by governments.
On 9th October, Kiambu county notified the Division of Disease surveillance and Response (DDSR) about a confirmed case of cholera using RDT and culture. There were reported suspected cases of cholera in several hospitals around Nairobi and Kiambu Counties following a wedding ceremony held on 8th October 2022 at Evas garden in Red Hill, Kiambu.
The County health department requested for response and logistical support from the National government due to stretched human resource capacity in view of the suspected outbreak involving several patients spread out in different facilities in both Kiambu and Nairobi county. The Ministry of Health therefore, mobilized a team from Kenya FELTP and DDSR to provide technical assistance in the investigation.
The specific objectives of the investigation were:
- To describe the cases in form of person, place and time
- To determine the cause of the outbreak
- To determine the magnitude of the outbreak
- To establish laboratory diagnosis
- To determine the risk factors
- To design prevention and control measures.
