Active Case Finding for Tuberculosis in Meru County, April 2025
In April 2025, Kenya FELTP, in collaboration with the National TB Program, conducted an active tuberculosis (TB) case-finding campaign in Igembe North, Igembe Central and Igembe South sub-counties of Meru County. The activity aimed to improve early detection, link people to treatment, and support prevention for both confirmed cases and their contacts.
Community outreach included symptom screening, digital chest X-rays with AI-assisted interpretation, and confirmatory testing using GeneXpert and Truenat platforms. Of the 518 people screened, 186 were identified as presumptive TB cases; 59 were tested and 4 were bacteriologically confirmed, revealing a detection rate higher than the national average. Contact tracing was also conducted and eligible contacts were initiated on preventive therapy.
The investigation highlighted persistent challenges such as delayed diagnosis, stigma, specimen handling gaps and connectivity issues. Recommendations focused on strengthening social mobilization, improving specimen management, timely contact tracing, reducing stigma, and enhancing outbreak response timeliness through the 7-1-7 framework.
