SCIENTIFIC WRITING WORKSHOP FOR BASIC & INTERMEDIATE GRADUATES

A Scientific Writing Workshop provide a platform to build the skills of the participants in scientific communication. It aims to help residents and recent graduates improve their draft manuscripts towards submission and publication in high impact peer-review journals.

The Kenya FELTP held a scientific writing workshop for graduates of the Basic and Intermediate Epidemiology FETP training levels. The workshop was held between 29th June and 1st July 2022 at Maxland Hotel in Kiambu county. Eleven graduates participated in the workshop, overseen by experienced facilitators and mentors from Kenya FELTP.

As a pre-requisite to attending this training, each participant was required to have a completed report from a study conducted during Basic or Intermediate Epidemiology training.

Some of the topics covered during the workshop include literature review, grammar, ethics, journal selection, referencing, plagiarism, presentation of introduction, results, methods, discussion, development of abstracts, and cover letters. By the end of the workshop, all the manuscripts were at various stages of development. The participants were expected to use data from their surveillance systems analyses, outbreak investigations and theses to achieve these objectives. By the end of the workshop all residents had their HLOs and draft manuscripts at different levels of readiness for submission. The organizers ensured COVID-19 containment measures were observed during the workshop
