Training Of Cohort 10 And 11 In Intermediate Epidemiology, 2025
In January 2025, Kenya FELTP recruited 2 cohorts of 54 health professionals for training in Intermediate FETP. The trainees were drawn from 22 counties and the national government, including the Ministry of Health and the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS). Participants represented diverse health disciplines such as public health, clinical medicine, nursing, laboratory science, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, and health records and information management, reflecting a strong One Health approach.
So far, both cohorts 10 and 11 have successfully completed Workshops 1 to 4 of Intermediate FETP. The training covered epidemiology, biostatistics, disease surveillance, surveillance system evaluation, outbreak investigation and response, data management and analysis, research methods, ethics, and scientific writing.
Between workshops, trainees returned to their respective workstations to apply their learning through individual field-based assignments, including: evaluation of surveillance systems, analysis of surveillance data, and participation in outbreak investigations within their counties. Each cohort also developed and implemented a group field-based project addressing a priority public health issue:
- Cohort 10 - Prevalence and Factors Associated with Depression and Substance Abuse among Healthcare Workers in Select Health Facilities in Kenya, 2025
- Cohort 11 - Uptake and Determinants of Cervical Cancer Screening among Female Health Workers in selected counties, Kenya, 2025
The 2 cohorts are scheduled to attend the 5th Workshop in November 2025, which will focus on the presentation of field project findings, manuscript development, and graduation. Through these trainings, FELTP continues to nurture a skilled, multidisciplinary workforce capable of detecting, investigating, and responding to public health threats, and thereby advancing Kenya’s commitment to a resilient, evidence-based health system
